Dream of tax free Space Station still behind bars
Apr 2, 2005 13: 55 EST
Still no news on the MIR knight, who seems to remain in jail for now. His black outfit now changed to stripes, Anderson keeps quiet as usual.
Who am I?
When he was busted, the agents found books with titles such as "Poof! How to Disappear and Create a New Identity, The ID Forger and Reborn Overseas, a guide to creating false identities in Europe, Australia and New Zealand."
Anderson, who had changed his alias at least seven times, always dressed black and never socialized. He drove a 15-year-old Oldsmobile and sported no signs of a lavish lifestyle. "Walt was a bit of a weird bird," an associate told New York Times early March. The government says that's because he hid it all in Switzerland.
Dreams of Kingdom in Space
Well, Anderson had plans. He loved Space almost as much as he hated the government. In an interview 5 years ago, he shared his ultimate dream: To build a Space Station where there would be no government, no taxes and where "... people would all be peaceful or I'd throw them out the air lock".
Unfortunately, the MIR Space Station was forced down by exactly the government Anderson so fiercely disliked, and now the knight himself is behind bars. Yet we might not have heard the last from the free spirited billionaire dressed in black.
Gold & Appel Venture Capital founder Walt Anderson (51), was arrested at a Washington airport, in what federal prosecutors call the largest criminal case of individual tax evasion.
Anderson started Orbital Recovery (repositioning of telecomm satellites), after the AT&T breakup, and G&A in 1992, teaming up with the Russian builders of the Mir ("peace") space station in 2000. Investing 20 million, he formed MirCorp, a company designed to turn the Russian Space Station commercial. Dennis Tito and Reality TV producer Mark Burnett were some of the famous names in the project.
