NASA launches new explorer schools
May 18, 2005 14: 05 EST
The new generation of space travel will require a new generation of explorers. A couple of weeks ago, Exweb ran a story about the physical training hopeful astronauts have to go through. But future space explorers will need to have solid training and education starting from childhood.
Human pioneers and robotic pathfinders
Yesterday, NASA named the 2005 class of NASA Explorer Schools. NASA’s chief education officer, Adena Williams Loston assured the students, "The entire universe – the planets, stars and distant galaxies – will be your classroom. As NASA pursues the Vision for Space Exploration, we want to prepare you for tomorrow's space exploration challenges, when we send a combination of human pioneers and robotic pathfinders to the Moon, Mars and beyond."
The Explorer School program supports the use of NASA content and programs to provide the highest levels of mathematics, science and technology education. Each new class includes 50 schools (from elementary to high school) that will embark on the three year space explorer education program
Like nothing we’ve ever seen
"We are charting a new course," astronaut veteran Franklin Chang-Diaz told the students. "The ships that will take us to Mars will be like nothing we've ever seen, but maybe you will get to design that ship. We have great hopes and aspirations for you."
A message from the pros
The Explorer School class received a surprise message from Expedition 11. Commander Sergei Krikalev and NASA ISS Science Officer and Flight Engineer John Phillips welcomed the students from the Space Station. "See you in space," Phillips said, signing off.
87 percent of all NASA Explorer Schools are in high poverty areas, and 76 percent represent predominantly minority communities. 98 percent of the 2005 class is in high poverty areas, and 82 percent in predominantly minority communities; 19 are in Hispanic communities.
