Russia plans manned mission to Mars, but money first
May 23, 2005 17: 07 EST
Bush and Putin have a lot to talk about these days, comparing rocket fuel and space maps are some of the fun subjects.
Both leaders plan a manned mission to Mars, but Putin is a sober guy: “We are working without fuss, sometimes cooperating with the U.S., sometimes on our own,” Interfax quoted the Russian leader as saying.
Shoestring expeditions
Putin wants Russians to mainly focus on economic growth, "secured not by natural resources exploitation, but by the development of innovational economic fields, such as the field of space exploration,” he told journalists at a press conference.
Bush declared he wants to land astronauts on Mars around 2030. Budget: $1 billion a year over the next five years. The U.S. government already spends $15.5 billion a year on the space program - in turn less than 1 percent of the overall budget. ITAR-TASS said in April that 305 billion rubles or $11 billion will be needed to implement the total space program for 2006-2015.
