Spirit tackles Mars summits
image story

Apr 20, 2005 15: 26 EST
Here on Earth, we’re in the heart of Everest season. Teams are in Base Camp, and beyond, staring up at the 29,035 ft peak. But there’s one team that’s even higher than that. The Spirit Rover has been making solo missions up several hills on Mars. At Exweb, we still have our fingers crossed for a summit push.

The three-dimensional image shows the terrain that Spirit has been covering since 2004. The picture of the area, known as "Columbia Hills,” was taken by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor.

Spirit’s hardy spirit

Spirit had a rough time last week. It had to overcome software glitches, command sequencing errors, and particularly tough terrain from April 8 through April 15, 2005. After the problems were solved, the rover picked up and continued exploring the "Columbia Hills." The rover is truly living up to its name, Spirit.

NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers' discovery of evidence of past water on Mars was the top scientific "Breakthrough of the Year," according to the journal “Science.” The Rovers completed their original mission in April of 2004. Spirit was launched from Cape Canaveral on June 10th, 2003. Opportunity followed on July 7th.
