We have reported earlier that SpaceShipOne and the Ansari X-Prize rocked the world last month and now, there are money coming our way.
The Funds
There are funds set up, such as the Colony Fund: "Now the general public can take part in a small way, investing in a tiny part of a larger portfolio for something that has a lot of risk to it, but possibly some great rewards over a long time horizon."
Venture Capital
Then there is the venture capital company Gold & Appel:
"It's been a pretty good month for this group because if all your friends thought you were nuts and commercial space wasn't real, you could watch the evening news and find out that there was some reality here," they said last month.
In-Q-Tel
Mike Griffin, is a former NASA exec and president of the venture-capital firm In-Q-Tel. This is another venture capital company interested in Private Space travel:
A private non-profit enterprise founded by CIA ("but we are not looking for government-specific solutions"), with a mission to identify and invest in cutting edge technology that serve US National security interests. This is what they offer:
A hands-on team
"For entrepreneurs, In-Q-Tel offers a source of capital, access to our network of technology companies and investors, and the opportunity to work on some of the toughest enterprise technology problems today.
For venture partners, we bring an in-house technical team that vets new technologies and accelerates their development. We also bring a hands-on team of experienced business builders and leaders committed to growing great companies that develop great products."
$1M to $3M
In-Q-Tel generally invests between $1M to $3M, lead investment rounds and co-invest with other firms.
Since launching operations in 1999, In-Q-Tel has evaluated over four thousand proposals, most from companies that had never previously considered working with the government, and invested in or otherwise established strategic relationships with more than 50 of these companies.
In-Q-Tel now includes a 50-person staff and two strategic business teams, Technical and Venture, with a bi-coastal presence in Arlington, Virginia and Menlo Park, California.
